PHNOM PENH FM: RE / DISC / OVER

On 5/5/2019, at 11 PM, ORF Kunstradio (Austria) broadcasts the sound collage PHNOM PENH FM: RE / DISC / OVER (40:58 min). The piece is based on a live recording at the Cambodian-German Cultural Center, Meta House Goethe-Center in Phnom Penh on March 2019, in cooperation with German music producers Chris Zippel ('Genuine'), Jan Mueller (Prof. Kinski) and Meta House founder Nico Mesterharm and Sao Sopheak. Young Khmer artists, bloggers and activists, who met Sao Sopheak over the course of her 10-year career as filmmaker, come to the fore. Also heard are Cambodian TV stars, women from the hill tribes in the northeast of the country and - posthumously - the Cambodian rock diva Kak Chanthy, who died in a car accident last year.
Chanthy and Sopheak had a shared passion for the Cambodian Rock'n’Roll of the 1960’s, which they - as 80% of the total population born after 1979 - know only from audio recordings, tapes or radio broadcasts. Due to the Khmer Rouge genocide (1975-79) and three decades of civil war, there’s almost no original vinyl left in the country. The songs by the “Cambodian Elvis” Sin Sisamouth and his contemporaries - who were mostly killed by the communists - still remind the older generation of better times, when Cambodia’s King Sihanouk wanted to develop his country into the "Switzerland of South-East Asia" and Cambodian pop culture was very popular throughout the whole sub-continent. Through audio snippets from Sopheak’s films, field recordings, re-worked record samples and live scratching, RE / DISC / OVER attempts to explore how Khmers today are living in ways that honor the spirit and music of the “Golden Era”.
